    GGP: Writer's Workshop

The goal of our project is to gather 100 letters for each of our three books, or a total of 300 letters for the entire project. This is the minimum that we have set for ourselves. Currently, we are not meeting that minimum.

Our current letter total for all books is 63 letters. The means we are short 237 letters. Our deadline is January 18. This means we have a little over a month to get those letters.

We have had over 150 members show interest in our projec, and that is not counting those members from foreign forums. If each of those 150 members wrote 2 letters each, we would meet our goal quite easily.

The problem is that these letters are not being written. Some may have school work getting in the way or work, some may just be putting off their letter writing until the last minute, and some may simply not feel comfortable writing a letter.

    - To those of you dealing with school or work, we understand the delay. Good luck with your work and get those letter to us as fast as you can.

    - To those of you waiting until the last minute, please don't. Keep in mind that a few of us are continually keeping an eye on the letter total and if you can turn your letters in to us quickly we can worry less and less about reaching our project goal.

    - To those who do not feel comfortable writing a letter, this short workshop is for you. If you need one-to-one help with your letter, I'm also available. All you have to do is send me a personal message to my inbox, username HELIO and we'll take it from there.

Post  Admin Tue Dec 15, 2009 12:40 pm

Since writing a friendly letter is simple, I'm going to keep this workshop as simple and straightforward as possible. Remember that writing a short, simple friendly letter should not take you more than 15 minutes.

Most letters have the following layout:

    GGP: Writer's Workshop Ffriendlyletter

    Heading
The heading is written in the upper-right hand corner of the page and includes the writer’s address and date. For the purpose of this project, we will elect to go with general locations instead of specific addresses.
    Florida, United States
    December 15, 2009

    Greeting
Each letter will instead begin with the greeting or a short salutation. The most common greeting is “Dear” followed by the person’s name.
    Dear Erica Durance,
However, since this will be an informal, friendly letter you can also elect to begin with something less formal such as, “Hello!” or “Greetings!” The deciding factor in how you begin your letter will ultimately lie on what you feel most comfortable with.

    Body
The body of your letter is of course the most important. It can be composed of one paragraph or multiple paragraphs. Usually it is best to break your thoughts in multiple paragraphs. If you decide to do this, you can start your letter with an introductory paragraph. Below you'll find several questions per section of your letter that you can answer to help you mold the content of your letter.

    \ S /

One common way to start a letter is by introducing yourself. Consider answering one or more of these questions.

    Introduction, Part One

    1. What is your name?

    2. When did you start watching Smallville?

    3. How old were you when you started watching Smallville?

    4. Why did you start watching Smallville?

    5. What country are you from? If international, how do you watch Smallville (via DVDs, online, it broadcasts there, etc)

    6. What is your background? (Are you a student? Do you work?)

Continue your introduction by explain the purpose of your letter as clearly as possible. Remember that all letters will have the same general purpose, to give our gratitude (appreciation/thanks) so talk about that in a sentence or two.

    Introduction (Part 2)

    1. What have the writers, cast or crew done that you appreciate?

    2. Who are you thankful to?

    3. What are you thankful to them for?

    4. How do you feel because of what they have done?

Move on to your body paragraphs by expanding or giving details on what you stated in your introduction. If you are grateful to Tom for being a great actor then state what episodes did he demonstrate his acting ability the best? Or, how has he refined his acting talent over the years? Give examples, episodes title, quote scenes, lines, ect.

General Questions for your body paragraphs

    1. Do you have a weekly routine that you follow for watching Smallville?

    2. Would you recommend this show to others? Why?

    3. Do your friends watch Smallville?

    4. Do your family members watch Smallville?

    5. Have you met people online because of Smallville?

    6. Are you a member of any groups online?

    7. Do you dedicate your time online to the show? Doing fanart, fanfic, fanvideos, etc?

    8. What is your favorite part of watching Smallville?

    9. How has the series changed over the past few seasons?

    10. What improvements have you seen in the series over the past seasons?

    11. If this was the least season of Smallville, how would you feel?
Do you buy the Smallville magazine?

    12. Do you own the Smallville DVDs? How many sets? Why do you own them?

    13. Do you read Superman comics?

    14. Did you grow up reading Superman comics?

    15. Are you a fan of Christopher Reeves, Margot Kidder and the Superman movies? How do they compare to Smallville and its actors?

    16. Are you a fan of Dean Cain, Teri Hatcher, and the New Adventures of Superman? How do they compare to Smallville and its actors?

    17. What is your favorite season of Smallville? Why?

    18. How does season 8 compare to season 9?

    19. Do you listen to Smallville podcasts? Why?

    20. What is the buzz for Smallville this season? What do the reviews say? What do the fans say?

    21. What is your favorite character? Why is he/she your favorite character?

    22. What qualities does your favorite character have?

    23. Do you like any particular romantic pairing? Why?

    24. How does Smallville compare to other shows? How so?

    25. Have you ever thrown a Smallville party to get ready for an episode? What did you do? What foods did you eat?

    Questions for Letters to Actors

    1. Who is your favorite actor? Why?

    2. How would you rate their acting talent?

    4. What is their best episode? Why?

    9. Do you watch their movies? Which ones? What are your thoughts about them? How do they compare to Smallville?

    10. What is your favorite project of theirs? Why?

    Questions for Letters to Writers

    1. What is your favorite episode?

    2. What made that episode so special?

    3. Do you have a favorite scene from that episode? What made that scene stand out?

    4. Do you have any favorite quotes from the episode? What are they?

    5. How is your favorite character written this season in comparison to another season? Better? Worse? Explain.

Choose any of these questions to help create your letter body paragraphs.

    Letter Sample Using These Questions

I have drafted a sample letter using these questions to show you how you can use them yourself. You will be able to see which question I have used for each part of the letter by reading what I have put in the brackets at the end of each section.

    Florida, United States
    December 15, 2009

    Dear Tom,

Smallville has been a part of my life since I was a freshman in high school. Since that time, I have gone to college, graduated, and become a chemical engineer. As much as my life has changed over the past couple of years, Smallville has remained a constant fixture in my life. [Introduction, Part 1, Q2] . My favorite character has always been Clark Kent and you have done an impressive job bringing him to life. I am writing this letter to you to express my appreciation for continuing your role as Clark Kent, and for continuing to grow as an actor, director, and now producer. [Introduction, Part 2, Q2/Q3]

You have been an amazing Clark Kent since season one and have now completely matured in your role in season nine. Your acting style feels refined and you appear to be completely at home with the character. [Questions for Letters to the Actors, Q3] You’ve done a fantastic job with every episode, but your standout episode for me has to be “Echo” because of the variety of acting skill that you displayed. This episode gave you a chance to showcase so many sides to Clark Kent. At the hospital we saw Clark extremely confident as he interrogated suspects alongside Lois. Later in that same scene we saw Clark in the light of a romantic lead as he asked Lois for a date. At the end of the episode Clark shed away his tough exterior and we saw him open up to Oliver and be there for him as a friend. As varied and different as each of those scenes were, you sold it each and every time. [Questions for Letters to the Actors, Q4]

    […]

Remember this is just one version of one letter. If I had chosen different questions to answer, my letter would look incredibly different. You have to play around with your questions. You can quickly open up a word document and try this for yourself right now.

The only thing I would advise against is answering all questions. Although it is possible to answer all questions, it will be an overwhelming task, not to mention unnecessary. We don’t want novels here. We just want simple, straightforward letters.

    \ S /

    Closing
The most common closing for a friendly letter is “Sincerely,”
    Sincerely,

However, just as there are a variety of different ways to start a letter, there are a variety of different ways to conclude a letter. Below you will see 50 different options. Select which ever best suits your taste.

    Letter Goals

In order to further along the letter sending process, we have devised a set of weekly goals for the amount of letters we would ideally like to see.

Each week we will see if we have reached our weekly goal. If we have, that will be good news and mean that we can continue sending out the letters at our current pace. If we do not reach our goal, however, then it will mean that we need to be more conscious of our time, deadlines, and the importance of the letters to the project.

Remember they are the crux of the project and we would like to have a minimum of 100 letters per book. Please help us achieve each of this goal. I will try to update the letter total each day so that you can see how far along we are to achieving each weekly goal.

Our goal for each week will be to receive 15 letters per book for 6 weeks in a row. At the end of the six weeks we should have approximately 90 letters more than the letters we currently have. Below is the weekly schedule.

    Week One
    Tuesday, 12/08/09 – Monday, 12/14/09

    Week Two
    Tuesday, 12/15/09 – Monday, 12/21/09

    Week Three
    Tuesday, 12/22/09 – Monday, 12/28/09

    Week Four
    Tuesday, 12/29/09 – Monday, 01/04/10

    Week Five
    Tuesday, 01/05/10 – Monday, 01/11/10

    Week Six
    Tuesday, 01/12/09 – Monday, 01/18/10

This is our current letter count per book.

Book One: Tom Welling (13 Letters)
Book Two: Erica Durance (18 Letters)
Book Three: General Cast and Crew (15 Letters)

*These current totals are the reason for the urgency of receiving more letters. It has been exactly 3 weeks since the project has started and this is our letter total. We cannot allow another three weeks to pass with so little productivity for the letter portion of this book.

Even though the above shows our current letter total for each book, for the sake of starting off the week with a clean slate, we will start each total at "0" so that by the end of the 6 weeks all book should have 90 letters. We will then add the additional letters we already have to that 90 total and each book should have at least 100 (if not more) letters in total.

So here we are, week one.

    WEEK 1 LETTER TOTAL
    Tom: 0/15 | Erica: 0/15 | Cast/Crew: 0/15

Countdown To Final Letter Deadline - Click Here to View

    __________________________________________________________
    Details: Book Three

Since Book 3 is a general book I have listed the letter totals below for each individual person below. For the writers and the directors, until a letter is sent to them as individuals you will not see their names stated below. Please keep track of these numbers and if there is someone below who hasn't received a letter that you appreciate, please consider sending that person a letter. For example, I know that Callum Blue has impressed many people with his rendition of Zod this season, yet so far he has zero letters. Let's make sure we change that. The same for our fellow writers and directors.

    Brian and Kelly (Producers): 1
Brian Q. Miller (Story Editor): 1
    General Writers: 2
    - Jordan Haley: 1
    General Directors:
    Louis Febre: 1
    Allison Mack: 3
    Justin Hartley: 1
    Cassidy Freeman: 3
    Callum Blue: 1
General Letter to all cast and crew: 4
